FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Burlington, VT—Green Mountain Transit (GMT) will resume fare collection on March 6, 2024, on Chittenden County, Commuter, and LINK Express routes. We had previously announced a start date in January but learned that critical components of the fare system would not be available until late
January.
Upon resumption, GMT will use a new, modern fare system that will increase non-cash payment options, increase speed of payment onboarding, and limit the daily and monthly costs to individual riders through a capping system. The proposed new fare structure will create a seamless travel experience with standardized fares across both local and commuter services.
“Our new fare system is pretty much ready to go, but the delayed components are key to making service affordable for cash-based riders.” Says General Manager, Clayton Clark.
With the new fare system comes a new fare structure. Rides on all Chittenden County routes (including Commuter routes) will be $2. GMT will no longer offer free transfers but will cap the daily cost of transit rides to $4 or $2 for discount fare riders. Discount fares are offered to riders aged 6-17, over 60, or with a disability. In addition to capping the daily cost of fares, GMT will also offer a monthly fare cap. If a rider reaches $50 ($25 for discount fare riders), the remaining rides in a 31-day will be free.
GMT will issue an outreach plan in the coming days outlining opportunities for in-person assistance. In addition to helping set up a new account, staff will be available for fare media buy-back events in January and February. GMT will not be offering cashback on past fare media however, we will offer the value in the form of account credit.
